From Victim to Victor
With Father Michael Lapsley

How can a bomb be a sign of love? When it proves that love and faith and gentleness are stronger than hatred and evil and death.

Father Michael Lapsley was a freedom fighter in South Africa in the early 90’s. Even though he is White, he was on a government hit list because of his work as a chaplain for the ANC. Two months after apartheid was abolished, Father Lapsley was sent a letter bomb hidden inside the pages of some religious magazines. Although the bomb didn’t take his life, it robbed Lapsley of both his hands, and one of his eyes. Today Michael Lapsley is back at work, sharing what he’s learned about the importance of healing painful memories. He helps others affected by apartheid (both Black and White) by acknowledging their victimhood, helping them realize what is redemptive about the past, and helping them carry that quality (for example, courage and/or commitment) into the future.

Father Lapsley’s work is on behalf of individuals, communities and nations. Why is this work so important? Lapsley is convinced that if victims are asked to “forgive and forget” they end up keeping their hate alive, and in turn, victimize others.
